In the summer of 1993, Eric Smith put together a business plan detailing a company that would meet key electronic product needs for retail stores. He asked his friend and client, Roy Mussaffi, owner of a chain of successful retail stores, to take a look at the plan. Mr. Mussafi liked the idea so much that he partnered with Mr. Smith to form Intech,
Inc., in September 1993.
Mr. Smith, Mr. Mussaffi and a staff of four set to work and soon formed partnerships with companies like Sanyo/Fisher, Pioneer, Zenith and Sony Electronics. Intech promoted and supplied these companies' products to independent, local electronics stores that were financially unable to offer such a dynamic product line.
Helping Introduce HDTV to America
In January of 1997, Intech interviewed with Samsung Electronics at the International Electronics Show in Las Vegas (CES) and became one of the first Authorized Samsung Distributors in the United States. After two very successful years with Samsung, Intech was asked to market Samsung’s first integrator HD Rear Projector nationwide and did so, promoting the product nationally through Home Theater Magazine. Intech is still a proud Authorized Samsung Dealer / Distributor, filling the needs of retail customers, Fortune 500 Companies, Government Agencies and independent Specialty Integrators.
In 2000, while flying to the International Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Eric Smith decided that HD was “here to stay” and purchased the URL www.thehighdefintionstore.com. The on-line superstore was designed over the next few years, built around the section called HD LEARNING CENTER, to provide customers with the knowledge they needed to purchase their new HD panel. The site officially went live on September 13, 2003, exactly (10) years after Intech was incorporated. The site is still the fastest growing division in the company today, with Intech offering products as an Authorized Dealer from Samsung, Sony, Toshiba, Peerless, Tributaries and Bello. Intech has plans to continue to add additional product content to the site.
Intech enters the Custom Home Theater Installation Business
The success that followed led directly to the launch of Intech's Home Theater Division. Converting Mr. Smith's office into a showroom, Intech quickly secured its first home theater job. As more jobs came in, Intech kept adding services, including custom cabinetry design in 2001. In 2002, they hired Bryan Glass, a former Product Specialist at Harvey Electronics in Long Island, to run the division. He added more products and custom installation to the offering, bringing Intech closer to becoming a full-service organization able to craft entire home entertainment packages for clients.
Within just a few years, Intech became Authorized for some of the best names in the custom install industry, including Crestron, RTI, Leon, Speakercraft, Niles ICS,Triad, Sim2, Bryston, Klipsch and Sunfire. Intech now has a full design and install staff on hand for this division, including a Project Manager, Sales and Design Manager and industry trained install technicians. Intech has been recognized as a TOP 50 Custom Integrator in the United States, since 2005, by CE PRO Magazine.
Intech’s Business Model Today
In September 2003, Intech realized that it was time to move to a larger facility in order to better accommodate the needs of its client base, both retail and fulfillment. Intech moved into the existing 7,500 square foot space, comprised of 4,500 square feet of warehouse and a 3,000 square foot office and showroom area. The showroom includes a six-seat dedicated movie theater room, featuring a 3D HD Projector and 7.1 Surround Sound System, as well as 3D HD Panels from Sony, Samsung and Toshiba. The showroom is controlled by a Crestron System.
Intech continued to diversify and now is proud to offers its products and services through its five divisions:
I. Corporate Fulfillment Discount Programs
II. GSA Government Approved Vendor
III. Custom Home Theater Installation
IV. Specialty Fulfillment to the CEDIA / Independent Installer Channel
V. Authorized On-Line Website nationally: www.thehighdefinitionstore.com
